1. Who we are

Rest Areas Canada ("we", "us") is published from France and is responsible for the personal information processed on this website (see the legal notice). Contact: contact@restareascanada.com. We apply the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to every visitor, wherever they are, and handle information from visitors in Canada in line with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for visitors in Quebec, Quebec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector.

2. What we collect and why

  • Messages you send us (email address, name, message) to answer your enquiry or correction. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in responding (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Server logs kept by our hosting provider (IP address, time, requested page, browser) for security and to keep the site running, deleted after a short period. Legal basis: legitimate interest.
  • Your location, only if you press "Rest areas near me" and allow it in your browser. It is used in your browser to sort nearby stops and is never sent to us.

3. Cookies and advertising

The site is paid for by ads from Google AdSense. Where the law requires consent, such as for visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, a consent message from Google – a consent management platform certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework – lets you accept or refuse cookies and personalized ads, or choose purposes one by one. You can change your choice at any time with the “Privacy and cookie settings” link at the foot of every page.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com.

Legal basis: your consent where it is required (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time. Apart from advertising cookies and the one that stores your choice, the site sets no cookies and uses no analytics.

Visitors in Canada

To apply Canadian and Quebec privacy law, the site asks Cloudflare, our host, which country and province your IP address is in. The answer is kept in your browser for the visit only; we do not store it. In Quebec, Google shows non-personalized ads unless you accept personalized ads in the message shown on your first visit. Elsewhere in Canada, ads may be personalized, and the notice on your first visit lets you turn this off in one click. Your choice is kept in your browser (local storage), and you can change it at any time with the “Privacy and cookie settings” link. You can also manage Google ads in My Ad Center. Non-personalized ads still use cookies for frequency capping and aggregate reporting.

4. Third-party services and transfers outside Canada

  • Hosting: Cloudflare, Inc. (United States) serves the site and processes server logs.
  • Maps: map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap, which receives your IP address when a map is shown. Fonts and all other files are served from our own domain.
  • Navigation links: pressing Navigate, Apple Maps, Waze or OpenStreetMap opens that service, whose own privacy policy then applies.
  • Advertising: Google AdSense (Google Ireland Limited and Google LLC) delivers the ads and receives your IP address and browser details; where you consent, or where consent is not required, it also uses cookies (see section 3).

These providers may process information outside Canada, including in the United States and the European Union, where it may be accessible to the authorities of those countries.

5. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict the processing of your personal information, to object to it, to withdraw your consent, and to data portability. Contact us at the address above. You may also complain to a data protection authority, for example the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec, or the CNIL in France.
